The town dates back to the 1820s and early Branxton consisted mainly of the business area, a service town for the farmers. For travellers, it was a stop-over place near a creek crossing. The historic building near Anvil Creek, now known as the Branxton Inn Arthouse (c.1843), operated as the "Travellers Arms Inn" from 1852.
The Committee of Branxton Tidy Towns, under the editorial direction of Mrs Melita Watson, compiled a 175 year history book (1828-2003) in 2003. It gives the full known history of the historical buildings, happenings and families of Branxton.

The book is available from Mrs Melita Watson (Phone 02 4938 16 73) for $25 with all funds going to the Branxton Tidy Towns Committee for beautification programs for the mainstreet of Branxton. Read more about the history of Branxton.
The town has an infamous welcome sign on approach by the local Lions Club stating that Branxton has 'two cemeteries and no hospital'.
